Reported by Motorsports Network:
Bruton’s up to his old tricks. Having problems with an excessive bill from the
Sheriff in Loudon, NH, Bruton is openly suggesting that he might pull one of
the races at that facility. The last time Bruton had a hissy fit, he threatened
to move Charlotte Motor Speedway out of the county. This is a high end game of
poker, complete with bluffing and aggressive betting. At this point, though, I
wouldn’t bet too much on the Sherriff’s position.
Updated by A Fan's View by S.D.
Grady: So, when I read the headlines on Friday, my immediate reaction to
Smith’s rather belligerent statement was that SMI finally found a way to take
that race away from New Hampshire and have somebody else to put the blame on
when they do.
Juicy details from S.D. Grady, a
Senior Writer for Frontstretch.com:
The
security detail for the week is being billed by the town at $170,000. This would pay for 80 full-time police
officers from the entire state to direct traffic on Rte. 106 leading to the
track, to patrol the campgrounds where approximately 5,000 RV’s appear for the
week, and general security inside the track on racedays.
SMI is confident they could run
outside police details for $75,000.
The
reduction would require that the track hire a private security firm to patrol
the camping areas.
$95,000 is a huge hunk of
change. It’s 1/6th of what NHMS pays the
Town of Loudon in property taxes each year.
The Police Chief is the one who sets
up the 80-man detail and schedules. He
personally earns $50.00/hr. for every hour he says he works on the race
weeks. His timeslips in the past have logged
19 and 20 hour days, totaling nearly 100 hours in five days. So, the man who insists that he cannot do
without 80 officers earns nearly $5,000 in a weekend each time the circus comes
to town.
Mr. Bruton Smith received a $1.1
million bonus for the 2009 fiscal year.

+ Of the late Glenn “Fireball”
Roberts passing, sports writer Max Muhleman once wrote that it was like waking
up to find that a mountain that had always been there was suddenly gone. That’s
how members of the Georgia racing community felt Sunday after learning of the
passing of
Mr.
Raymond Parks. Brandon Reed at http://georgiaracinghistory.com/
+ Raymond Parks - the "Rick
Hendricks of his day" says Kyle Petty.
+ Thanks to NASCAR revisionist
history, Parks has long been a footnote in the pages of the sport. In reality,
surely NASCAR - and perhaps even the sport of stock car racing itself - may not
even exist today without the efforts or Raymond Parks. Parks, born on June 5,
1914, left a desolate family of 16 children in Dawsonville at the age of 14. He
quickly learned the moonshine business making and running the illegal whiskey.
Later, Parks combined his moonshining activities with a numbers racket called
‘the bug’ to amass a small fortune by the age of 19. His nefarious activities
also earned him a nine month stretch in
the
federal penitentiary in Chillicothe, Ohio, from 1936 to 1937.

+ To see a story and photos of Mr.
Parks birthday party two weeks ago:
http://georgiaracinghistory.com/2010/06/11/friends-fans-celebrate-
raymond-parks-birthday
+ Parks, the last living attendee of
the famous meeting that formed NASCAR at the Streamline Hotel in December 1947,
lived up to his “away from the limelight” persona from the start of the
organization. He lurked in the back of the room, sometimes walking out, as
France dominated the conversation and incorporated what became “NASCAR” into
his own enterprise. In fact, Parks and others involved saw France’s leadership
of this stock car body as more of a hostile takeover of the budding sport than
an organization. The acronym “NASCAR,” by the way, was coined by Parks’ genius
mechanic Red Vogt, who operated one of Parks’ many gas stations around the
original “center of stock car
racing:”
Atlanta. http://www.frontstretch.com/dturnbull/30006/
+ Because Parks made a lot of his
fortune on the other side of the law, NASCAR was less than generous in
recognizing what he did, especially monetarily, to keep it alive and
flourishing. France and his son are both in NASCAR’s new Hall of Fame; Parks
isn’t. (This page
includes
probably the last picture ever of Parks, from two weeks ago.)
Tim Richardson passed away from an
apparent heart attack. He was a driver, a fan, and a flagman, and he had worked
North Georgia and Cleveland Speedway. He had recently stepped away from the
flag stand to spend more time with the Boy Scouts he worked with - a great man
who will be sorely missed. (from Top of the Box)
Andy Buffington passed away this
week. He raced a lot at the Peach Bowl. Visitation Saturday 7-9 and Funeral
Sunday at 2pm.

History may be made at Thursday
Thunder’s fourth week of the 2010 season as a short-track star goes for the
all-time wins mark on the “Thunder Ring” at Atlanta Motor Speedway Thursday.
Skip Nichols sits just one-win away from sole possession of Thursday Thunder’s
all-time wins record, seeking his 28th-career win.
Nichols
sits tied with Thunder legend Doug Stevens with 27 wins after sweeping both
Masters class features during Double Features Night at Thursday Thunder on
June, 17. Expected to enter both the Masters and Thunder Roadsters features for
week four, Nichols will have two opportunities to claim history.
Nichols
currently sits first in Masters division points with a 12-point margin after
claiming three wins in the season’s first-four races. Meanwhile, Nichols is
tied for first in the Thunder Roadsters class with Brian Meredith (Locust
Grove), with each posting one 2010 win.
Fan Fun: Featuring big bellies and a
small pool, a select group of Thursday Thunder fans will be selected to
participate in a mini-pool Belly Flop Contest. The contest will be judged by
fan applause and by the Thursday Thunder grandstand announcers and a prize will
be awarded to the top flop.

Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Friday
Night Drags resumes on June 25 for week seven, including a burn-out contest and
a Hot Rod Heaven special Show-N-Shine class. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. and
nightly drag race eliminations start after 9:00 p.m. Entry to drag race or for
the Show N’ Shine is just $20 or competitors can purchase a combo ticket for
$30 to enter both. Spectator tickets $7 for adults and children under six
free. www.atlantamotorspeedway.com
James “Redd” Griffin’s Screven Motor
Speedway, the southern Georgia one-third mile oval known as “The Action Track
of the South,” also has a reputation for having a friendly atmosphere and
modest gate prices.
In keeping
with that, owner promoter Redd Griffin has once again announced his own
personal “economic stimulus plan” for his Southern All Stars Dirt Racing Series
event scheduled for Saturday. Grandstand tickets will be just $10 each with
kids 12 and under free. Pit passes will be $15 and will also allow patrons to
make their way over to the Savannah River Dragway.
“Folks just don’t have a whole lot
of extra money laying around for entertainment. So we want to give them a good
value and hopefully that will encourage more of them to come out and spend the
evening with us.”
Griffin
said. The facility is also known far and
wide for it’s home cooked concessions, featuring such items as a pork chop
sandwich and spaghetti dinners. Griffin says he will have more of the same
great food and maybe a few surprises on the menu. “When you pay to get
something to eat you need to get something that’s good and worth your
money."
Scott Creel, of Franklinton, LA,
leads the Southern All Stars point standings coming in to the Screven event. “I
have heard a lot about Screven and how racy it is so I am excited about getting
over there. It should be a great race.” Creel said. Chasing Creel in the
standings are defending SAS Champion Randy Weaver, Hall of Fame driver Freddy
Smith, Kentuckian Doug Smith, and Rural Retreat, VA’s Daniel Baggerly. In the
last SAS visit to Screven local racer Casey Barrow picked up his biggest career
win utilizing an all steel engine. Barrow and a contingent of other local
racers like Chesley Dixon, Ben and Jeremy Faircloth, John Henderson and Jordy
Nipper are also expected to be on hand vying for the $5000 winner’s purse.
The 50 lap / $5000 to win Southern
All Stars event will headline a
full card
of racing starting at 8:00 PM. www.screvenmotorspeedway.com

The Sunoco Gulf Coast Championship
weekend for asphalt super late models includes Friday evening at Five Flags
Speedway with the Blizzard series 100 lap event and Saturday evening at Mobile
International Speedway.
There are some rule changes for the
100 lap races this weekend.
In and effort to address some of the issues
of the times (read
economic)
a 50 lap competition caution will be used Friday and Saturday night.
In a nutshell, the five-minute caution
will allow race teams to change two tires and refuel and return to the track to
the same position they held when the caution flag was displayed.
The reasoning behind the introduction of
the competition caution is to save money for the race teams. One of the many ways is the reduction of the
needed pit crew. Many of the late model
race teams can no longer afford a full pit crew to make tire changes, etc.
in seconds
under competition conditions.
With the introduction of the
competition caution, the leader at the 50 lap mark will still receive the bonus
for holding that position and will restart the race as the leader.
Another of the rule changes being
introduced for the race series this weekend is the invert on the start. The
fast qualifier will roll a special dice that displays the numbers four, six or
eight for inversion.
A speed limit has been established
in the pit area during the Sunoco Gulf Coast Championship series. All competitors will be held to 15 MPH while
in the pit area.
Points: 14-year old Chase Elliott
holds a 28 points lead over Bubba Pollard of Senoia, Georgia, 50 point lead
over Jeff Fultz of Troutman, North Carolina, a 56 point lead over defending
Gulf Coast Champion Johanna Long of Pensacola, and a 73 point lead over
Casey
Smith of
Austin, Texas and Josh Hamner of Chelsea, Alabama.
Toccoa Speedway is about the only
Dirt Track around running three classes of Latemodels. There will be Trophys
this week for the Limited Latemodel & Crate Latemodel classes courtesy of
the "Peanut Man", and super late models too.
This Saturday's Featured event will
be the Lightning Quick Limited Latemodels competing in a $1,200 to win Feature
event. The Fastrak Crate Latemodels will be competing in an $800 to win Feature
Event.
Other
Divisions seeing action this Saturday night will be the Hobby / Enduro / Street
Stock 4Cyl / Young Guns / and the Front Wheel Drives.
These
divisions will run heat races depending on car count. Gates open
@ 5pm /
Drivers Meeting @ 6:45pm / Hot Laps @ 7:30pm.

Richard Childress Racing has
announced that Zaxby’s will be sponsoring Clint Bowyer in this weekend’s Lenox
Industrial Tools 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in the NASCAR Sprint Cup
Series. Zaxby’s, primary sponsor of RCR’s No. 21 car in the NASCAR Nationwide
Series, is celebrating its 20th year in business. The southeastern chain known
for its chicken fingers and Buffalo wings has over 500 locations in over 12
states.
The $2,500-to-win Salute To The
Armed Forces 50 for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Tour
at East Alabama Motor Speedway was rained out on Saturday night. This is the third time the race has been
rained out since its originally scheduled date on May 29.
The shortage of super late model
cars at asphalt tracks struck Greshams Saturday, as only 10 cars showed.
Further problems came up after qualifying, when the first and third fastest
failed random fuel checks, and two other teams drained their fuel and started
in the rear.
According
to race officials, pole sitter Chase Elliott, Johnny Henderson, Jimmy Garmon,
and Bubba Pollard all qualified on unapproved fuel. Meanwhile, Johanna Long will be sent to the
back for pulling tape from the car too soon.
Chase Elliott was involved in an
incident during the first lap and was unable to finish the race.

Racing returns to Tri-County
Saturday with the Cornwell Tools Modified Street Mid-Season Championship, then
on July 3rd, the Southeastern Late Model Sportsman Series 40-lap $1500 to win
race along with the famous Tri-County Fireworks Show will be on the schedule.
Cullman, AL, driver Kevin Thomas
blasted around Tri-County Race Track at speeds over 100 mph to take the Georgia
Mini Sprint feature in the 18-car field. Thomas won his heat race and started
on the pole and stayed in the lead as half a dozen fellow racers were glued to
him around the super-fast clay oval. On the white flag lap, three of the sprint
cars tangled in the second turn with one car flipping and coming to rest on its
side. As emergency rescue got to the scene, the driver got out and waved to the
crowd. On the restart, McDonough, Georgia driver Dwight Pilgrim passed Thomas
going into turn one only to see Thamas go to the high groove in turn two and
hold the lead to the checkered flag. Tom Maushardth, Ron Bishop and Dank
Chapman rounded out the top five.
The
Late Model feature was another battle between Morganton driver Bobby Panter and
Peachtree’s Jamie Oliver as the two battled for 25-laps less than a car length
separating them. Kevin Sutton, Preston Crisp and Doug Sneed filled the top

Clint Smith qualified fifth, and won
his heat race, but finished 12th in the A-Main after running second for much of
the race’s first half.
He was
hampered by a broken engine valve throughout the distance, causing a loss of
power that cost him ground on each restart. Shane Clanton was 8th.

Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN won his
second straight Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series event in dramatic fashion on
Friday Night as he captured night number one of the Scorcher 100 Presented by

He passed Dan Schlieper of Sullivan, WI heading to the white flag as he

toss beach balls into the stands – the fan with the winning driver’s autograph
will win $100 cool cash!!!
