During the practice session of Saturday, March 27th, there were two, father and son’s breaking in their equipment. It was the Altman’s and the Adams’. Adding up the total years of racing between them and you come up with the age of some vintage talent. They race because they want to have fun and love racing. Other drivers finding out it’s going to be a rough start to the season were, Ronnie “Flash” Daniels and Remington Prince. Brent Williams is new to the 4 Cylinder Stock class and Austin Lightner will be competing in Late Model Stock. This season, the racing going to continue to be exciting!

Timmonsville, SC (April 7, 2010) – The racing program at Florence Motor Speedway moves to this Friday, April 9th at 8:00 pm. The pit gate will open at 1:00 pm for practice and registration. Featured classes this season include Late Models, Super Stocks, Stock 4 Cylinders, Young Guns and the Shriner’s Cup (former Bomber class). During opening night, spectacular racing took place in all divisions and provided race fans of all ages with a preview of the excitement to come in 2010.
In
the Late Model Stock Car feature,
Justin Shorter drove the number 45 Shorter
Racing Chevrolet to checkered flag ahead of Archie Adams Jr. and “the
Rookie” - Austin Leitner! It took a
couple starts to get the feature under way as the drivers learned to control
their adrenalin and make some pit stops to adjust bent sheet metal. While it was “the Rookie” Leitner setting the
fastest time in qualifying, it was “Racing Expert” Rudy Branham that grabbed
the lead. As Leitner may be a rookie in
a late model, he’s a veteran in a 600 Legends racecar. He’s taken to driving a late model fast and
demonstrated he’s not shy about letting you know where his bumper is. A little altercation placed these two in the
rear at a point in the race that had the crowd on the edge of their seat. Earlier though there were some bumping and
missed shifts that caused some collisions on the front stretch. The cars of Remington Prince and Ronnie
Daniels suffered the most damage but were able to resume after quick pit
stops. A couple of attempts by Archie
Jr. in the closing laps to take the lead from Shorter came up short as Leitner
finished his final lap in third.
The
Super Stock feature win went to “Hot
Foot” Kevin Jackson as he beat Curtis Peoples to the checkered flag. The race began with Timmy Flowers on the
inside row locked in a door-to-door heat with Peoples. Peoples gained the lead as “Hot Foot” Jackson
began his warm up for a challenge. Jon
Martin and Ken McClary dealt with the competitors Ken Freeman, Adam Dowling,
and Flowers until they closed on the checkered flag for third and fourth.
Excitement
in the Stock 4 Cylinder began with
Dwayne Potter in control of the field and “Hot Foot” Jackson next in pursuit! Russ Turner Jr raced up to challenge Jackson
until the “Hot Foot” found his footing next to Potter for the lead. The two tangled in turn four in a crash that
eliminated Jackson from the race. Potter
managed to come out of unscathed and returned to race from the rear. Jarrett Smith and Russ Turner inherited the
new front row on the restart. Smith and
Turner had the crowd standing as they battled for the final laps. Smith brought the Bennett Law Firm Ford
Mustang to the checkers for his first feature win of 2010. Turner, Potter, and Bobby Tumbleston III
finished in the consecutive order.
Additional entertainment of the evening came from a presentation by The Jamil Jet Shriner’s of Sumter, The Shriner’s Cup Series and the FMS Young Guns. The excitement will continue this Friday, April 9th at 8:00 pm when the “Racing and Fun” continues at Florence Motor Speedway.

Timmonsville, SC (April 11, 2010) – For the first Friday night of racing at Florence Motor Speedway fans saw an exciting Pepsi 150. Feature winners of the night were Jamey Lee, Kevin Jackson, Jarrett Smith, Bobby Schwabenbauer, and Brent Williams.
2009 Division Champion Jamey Lee set the fastest time to qualify on the pole for the Late Model Stock car feature followed by former Champion Michael Elliott. Lee had command of the field but he had his hand full trying to get there. Elliott stayed with him in the turns but momentum was in Lee favor as he’d break from the field. Elliott lost his chance having his right front tire cut down in a late race restart. Lee took the checkers ahead of last week feature winner Justin Shorter, Archie Adams Sr., Averitt Lucas and Austin Leitner.
Finishing first in the FMS Super Stock feature for the second week in a row was Kevin Jackson. Having had a mechanical failure last week, Adam Dowling came back with a second place finish this week. Third through fifth went to Todd Amerson, William Huston and Tommy Lilly.
Another repeat winner was Jarrett Smith doing a double in the Stock 4 Cylinder feature. Smith closed in on Kevin Jackson with less than ten laps in the feature. Flowing suit was Russ Turner Jr. Russ had to work for the finish in a battle with Michael Grooms. Andy Herring finished fourth ahead of Jackson just before the final lap.
Bobby Schwabenbauer collected another feature win in the Shriner’s Cup division and Brent Williams was a first time winner in the FMS Young Guns division. An announcement is forth coming for a special feature in June to feature the Shriner’s Cup cars!

Timmonsville, SC (May 3, 2010) – Race fans of short track stock car racing will still be able to get their weekly dose of live racing “Southern Style” this Friday night at Florence Motor Speedway. That’s right ladies and gentlemen. Seniors tickets are only $8 and Adults can view all the excitement for just $10. Family admission prices are still available for just $20, which includes Mom, Dad, and everyone in the family under, 12 years of age.
This past Friday night Strom Altman Sr. drove the Altman Suzuki “Dodge” to the checkered flag from a fast qualifying pole position of 18.351 seconds. Averitt Lucas, Michael Elliott, Jamey Lee, and Archie Adams Jr. finished in the consecutive order after a grueling 50 lap Late Model Stock Car feature.
Russ Turner Jr. has found the groove he’s been looking for since the season opener Stock 4 Cylinder feature. He had the competition scrambling for their finishing’s as he scrambled their plates on his way to the checkered flag. Jarrett Smith, Emory Herring, Leon Vinson, and Bobby Tumbleston might do better to have their palms read before they return to the track this Friday night.
Ricky Locklair doesn’t need the cards to tell his future, he paid attention in math and science class. He’s calculated the exact combination of air/fuel mixture, compound of rubber squared, cam angle and gear ratio to add another feature win to his far from complete racing resume. Kevin Jackson, Ken McClary, Adam Dowling, and Cody Parker followed and will be spending time in study hall this week in search of answers in Super Stock Class.
Will “Rex” Smith was a guy “just wanting to have fun”. Rex as he’s known now days brought his talent to the party with Kevin O’Brien playing second fiddle. The Duo played with the harmonics of twin four cylinders in stock major circular of a 4/10the scale. Bobby Schwabenbauer, Landon Jefferies and Chris Scott, will be visiting the tuners prior to entering this talent show next week in the continuing saga of the Shriner’s Cup.
Master Tyler Howell demonstrated he has racing in his blood and he’s getting over his shyness too! Mom and Dad better watch out, the young ladies will be hanging around his pit box in no time at all. Cody Weatherford demonstrated he can drive a car with three tires, although it’ll take four good ones to win!

Timmonsville, SC (May 12, 2010) – Hey Forrest, racin’s like a box of chocolates at Florence Motor Speedway! When they made the movie Forrest Gump they left out surely, what would’ve made the movie a little more exciting, Stock Car Racing! Now we’ll have to wait another how many years before someone’ll come up with a decent screenplay to take advantage of something so good to be in the picture. A real race fan wouldn’t want to wait when it can be found right here in the Pee Dee every week. And, with “big” show that was in the nearby metropolis Friday May 7th, it was the “littlest”, “big” show where there was still, some serious racin’ goin’ on at FMS.
Claude said,
“Shoot Martha, why should we pay a lot of hard earned money to sit for hours,
when we can enjoy ourselves for a fraction of each and see some real boys
racin’ over in Timmonsville”!
Let’s just say that Claude, Martha, Eli, and Zoey got to see some mighty fine racin’ (for only $20) when Tyler Howell captured his second win in a row and he don’t even have a learner’s permit yet! Ken McClary drove three hours from Greenwood, SC to win the Super Stock feature for “Double J” Farms. Then there was Andy “Fireball” Herring winning his first ever Stock 4 Cylinder feature almost to the equivalent in number of laps as to his years of age. But wait, “Martha, did you say your favorite driver won the Late Model feature”! Yes, and she went home to bake a cake to celebrate! Archie Adams Jr. tagged Justin Shorter on the last lap as they was comin’ out'a turn four! Hot, boy he was hot! Dependin’ on who you asked you’d get a different side of things but it was Archie that collected the win. And last but not least Bubba Johnson brought his car from Sumter to win the Shriner’s Cup feature bringin’ the curtain down!
Just on last reminder, Family admission prices are still available for just $20, which includes Mom, Dad, and everyone in the family under, 12 years of age. For current racing information and other track facts, visit the Florence Motor Speedway website, www.florencemotorspeedway.com!

Timmonsville, SC (May 18, 2010) – The Allison Legacy Series will be at Florence Motor Speedway this Friday night, May 21st for a special
50 lap feature event. Seventeen year old
Justin Allison has won the last 3 races this year, at Rockingham, Hickory and
Wake County. He’s the current point’s
leader and a first for him in the three years he’s been competing in the
ALRS. Justin is a third generation
Allison family driver and aspires to move up to a Late Model race car soon.
About the Car
The
Allison Legacy car is a three-quarter sized replica of a Sprint Cup car and is
powered by a four cylinder MAZDA B-2200 truck engine that produces
approximately 125 horsepower. The cars use the standard MAZDA five-speed
transmission.
The
cars weigh about 1,400 pounds dry but must weigh a minimum of 1,675 pounds with
driver to race. The series is a “SPEC” series designed to minimize your
racing costs and place the emphasis on the driver instead of the equipment.
“The Allison Legacy Cars are
excellent equipment for the beginner to get his or her first exposure to
racing,”
said David Pearson, winner of 105 NASCAR Winston Cup races. “They are well designed and professionally constructed
cars that will give the drivers the same feel and experience they would get
from a bigger and more powerful car.”
The
Allison Brothers, sons of former NASCAR competitor Donnie Allison, are the
creators of the Allison Legacy car. Rules and National technical
inspections are strictly enforced to limit alterations to the basic car. The
engines are sealed and can only be rebuilt through Allison Brothers Race
Cars. The engines are resealed before shipment back to the
competitor. Almost all parts are spec and cannot be modified for
competition.
About the Series
The Allison Legacy Touring Series offers a professional to intermediate racing program. This unique and innovative program attracts drivers, new and old, with or without experience, and has proven to be a valuable stepping stone for drivers looking to further a racing career.
“It’s important to offer a program for everybody who wants to be involved,” explained Kenny Allison. “We are growing as a series and as a promotional outlet. Drivers are able to get valuable exposure and experience with our program that can contribute to furthering a racing career. At the same time, people who want to get into racing just for fun can maintain and operate the car in this series on a minimal budget, and with little or no experience.”
There are 22 Touring Races scheduled for 2010. Most events will be 50 laps. Some are 35 laps and a 200 lapper is scheduled for November 6th at Florence Motor Speedway. The Touring Series runs on Kershaw and Rockingham road courses. There are approximately 150 regional events in different areas around the country.

Timmonsville, SC (May 25, 2010) – Door to Door Action and More at Florence Motor Speedway! That’s right race fans! This Friday night will be, another action
packed night of local stock car racing, all provided by “living local
legends”! Let me clarify the “living
local legends”. Their names are Turner,
Peoples, Weatherford, and of course the Locklair Brothers and many, many more! You see last week is history and this Friday
will be another historic evening.
Another chapter will be written and you’ll want to witness it in
person. Now to recap what happened last
week.
Headlining the show was the Allison Legacy Series. It was a big
show in a small package as the
group of drivers came from as many as four different states to meet the
challenge of ending a three race winning streak of Justin Allison. The drivers took to the track for qualifying
and for the second straight week, Justin qualified on the pole. This being another first as the racing
bloodline pursues another generation up the racing ladder. Justin had his work cut out for him as he
raced Hunter Devers for command of the field. Once the duel ended, it was Allison out front
until lap twenty when he spun in turn four.
The next three cars of Hunter Devers, Bobby McCarty and Gus Dean missed
Allison but tangled with each other.
When the track was cleared of broken fiberglass and bent parts, the
first five were now the last five. Tyler
Hill took control of the group for all but the last remaining laps of the race
as those last five worked their way to the front. Allison took advantage of Hills falter in the
closing laps to take a record fourth win in a row. Devers finished in second and Garrett Bunch
in third. Tyler Hill finished fourth and
the top-five finisher was veteran Legacy Series driver Michael Cooper. Garrett Bunch was the Hard Charger of the
Race. Justin LaDuke was the Rookie of
the Race.
Local division wins went to Cory Weather in the FMS Young Guns feature. The Super Stock feature win went to Curtis Peoples as he out dueled the Locklair’s! The Late Model Stock Car feature win went home to Manning, SC with Averitt Lucas driving the Lucas Racing, Clarendon Auto Parts/Ed Gibbons Chevrolet.
When you come to the track this Friday, there will be some surprises in store for you and you’ll have to be there to find out what they are! In the mean time you can check out this and other track facts, at the Florence Motor Speedway website, www.florencemotorspeedway.com!

Timmonsville, SC (September 10, 2010) – As racing starts to wind down for the 2010 season there is still “Plenty More Left” turns to be made. Michael Elliott displayed that he’s got more left in him when he raced the Ronnie Howell Motorsports late model to the feature win leading Averitt Lucas to the checkered flag. Lucas set the fastest qualifying time, but lacked in ability to seal a win after having a very dominant run in past weeks. “Racing Expert” Rudy Branham finished third after dealing with the contentions of Archie Adams Sr., Donnie Johnson, and others.
Russ Turner Jr. and Jarrett Smith provided another round of exciting competition in the 4 Cylinder feature with Turner laying claim to another win. Bobby Schwabenbauer won the Shriner’s Cup feature with Tyler Howell taking honors in the FMS Young Gun division. Look for Tyler to make his late model debut Friday Sept. 17th. William Hutson won the Super Stock feature, his first ever win.
The Allison Legacy Series will also be featured this Friday, September 17th with one more feature race at the speedway before returning in November for their season finale.
There is Plenty More Racing “Lefts” at Florence Motor Speedway. For current racing information and other track facts, visit the Florence Motor Speedway website, www.florencemotorspeedway.com! For information about the Allison Legacy series, go to www.allisonlegacy.com.

Strom Altman Sr. made it three for three this season as he led all forty laps in the Limited Late Model feature. An early spun for Altman played no affect on the racing action. Timmonsville, SC (October 17, 2010) – This coming Sunday October 24th the Late Model Super Trucks will be the featured event at Florence Motor Speedway. Super Stocks, Stock 4’s and Shriner Bombers will also provide some great racing to watch just before the October 31st Halloween Eve of Destruction and the November 7th 11th Annual Fall Classic. On this past Sunday, it was a beautiful day to be outside and see great racing live and in person rather than on the HD big screen. Tyler Howell, Michael Tucker, Curtis Peoples, Averitt Lucas and Bobby Schwabenbauer were feature winners.
Over one dozen LMST drivers have committed to this coming special feature. When it comes to putting on a show, the Super Trucks are even more exciting to watch than the top professional league. If they’d have had these back in the day, the moonshiners would’ve given the law an even more, harder time to catch them. The way these guys race now, you’d think they were running from the law. You’ll see some real “rubbin’ is racin’” when this feature takes place:
On October 31st it’ll be time to celebrate the fall holiday the FMS way with the Halloween Eve of Destruction! Limited Late Models, Super Stocks, Stock 4’s and Shriner Bombers will be part of the party with a lot of Tricks and Treats!
The 11th Annual Fall Classic is set for the 5th, 6th and 7th of November. Everything is kicked off on Friday with a full day of practice for all divisions. Saturday is qualifying and the Fall Championship 200 for the Allison Legacy Car Series. Sunday is race day for all divisions. Make plans to attend the 11th Annual Fall Classic and see some really great “live” stock car racing.
When the races were over on Sunday the 17th, Tyler Howell won the FMS Young Gun feature over Mike Driggers the Sumter Speedway 2009 Champ. Michael Tucker won the Stock 4 Cylinder feature after having to out run Jarrett Smith and Russ Turner Jr. Curtis Peoples was victorious in the Super Stock feature narrowly escaping the grasp of Ricky Locklair Sr. and Stacy Matthews. Averitt Lucas had the best handling car in the Late Model feature showing Strom Altman Sr. and Ronnie “Flash” Daniels he’d came to the track to Win! Bobby Schwabenbauer was the courteous winner in the Shriner Bomber feature showing Ricky Locklair Jr. to the checkered flag.
Don’t forget about the Super Trucks coming back this Sunday October 24th and the other fabulous racing events coming to Florence Motor Speedway. For current information about the special ticket prices and racing information, visit the Florence Motor Speedway website, www.florencemotorspeedway.com!

Limited Late Models, Super Stocks, Stock 4’s and Shriner Bombers will be part of the party with a lot of Tricks and Treats! What better way to get a jump on Halloween night than taking in some racing first. There’s plenty of room to “tailgate” and cheer on your favorite local driver. Get up close to the action in the turns for only $10 or grab a spot on a picnic table in the beautiful new picnic area near turn one. Senior citizens admission is just $8 and junior citizens (12 to 16) tickets are just $5! While major league stock car racing has choked out real race fans it’s time to reacquainted with the joint that got them started, the “local short track”.

To recap what happened on Sunday Oct. 24th, Jamie Weatherford got the jump on fast qualifier Tim Lollis. Lollis would fall all the way to the rear only to work his way back to runner up at the end of the fifty lap feature. Jimmy Herrington made a bid for the lead as Lollis was making his way through the field, only to see his efforts fail and have to settle for a third place finish. “Racing Expert” and Radio Personality Rudy Branham came from deep in the field to finish fourth after some serious maneuvers through the pack. Kerry Lawrence raced his “For Sale” truck to a respectable fifth place finish. Russ Turner Jr. collected another feature win in the Stock 4 Cylinder feature and Ricky Locklair Sr. remains the man to beat in the Super Stock division. Tyler Howell moved from a Young Gun to a Shriner Bomber and put a hurtin’ on the old fella’s that made up his competition.

Halloween Eve of
Destruction Review
Going in to Late Model Stock Car feature Strom Altman had three feature wins in seven races. Altman set the fastest qualifying time and maintained dominance over the field of eleven other competitors for a flag-to-flag win. His strongest competitor and second quick in qualifying, Averitt Lucas now has eleven feature wins in fifteen races. Averitt maintained consistent tracking with Altman to the checkered flag and had to contend with holding off the competition on restarts from various cautions. Lucas remains in front for the 2010 track championship and is a very stout choice for the win in the “Annual Fall Classic”: Ronnie “Flash” Daniels was definitely the “Hard Charger of the race”. Daniels dealt with dodging the competitors and coming from the rear after a pit stop for a tire replacement. Donnie Johnson and Gary Ledbetter were fourth and fifth.
Ricky Locklair remains “King of Super Stocks”. Locklair gets out front when going green and knows how to keep the competitors in his rear view mirror. Stacy Matthews held off William Hutson and Curtis Peoples. Matthews is searching for a dial-in that can keep pace with Locklair and Hutson overcame mechanical issues for his finish. Peoples stated post race that he misinterpreted the white flag for a yellow. He may need to see the eye doctor before the “Annual Fall Classic”. Leon Vinson was awarded the win in the Stock 4 feature after “Mr. First Place” Kevin Jackson’s car failed the post race inspection after a protest was filed. Toby Milligan, Todd Chappell, Dustin Ray, and Adam Dowling were respective top five finishers. Josh Dean capped the day with his first feature win in the Shriner’s Bomber Cup division. It was a great day to take in “live” stock car racing and the “11th Annual Fall Classic” is going to be greater!

Timmonsville, SC (November 1, 2010) – The 11th Annual Fall Classic at Florence Motor Speedway is now history in the weekly short track racing annals of the internet and the memories of those who were part of it. Six will remember their thrill of victory, while a good number of others will remember the sting of finishing less than what they’d hoped to have achieved. There will be stories that can be passed down the racing generations and a lot of advice about hard lessons learned and the fun and excitement that went into the weekend of racing.
Saturday, November 6th was qualification day for all divisions and the running of the Fall Championship 200 for the Allison Legacy Car Series and a 25 lap Shriner’s Bomber/U-Car features. Tyler Hill won the Allison Legacy feature after starting from the Pole Position. The Shriner’s Bomber feature win went to Mark Dean as the controversial incident on the last lap involving Josh Dean and Bobby Schwabenbauer made for tough choices to be made and accepted. From whomever’s perspective the driver’s seats aren’t located in the official scoring tower and the call was in favor of Mark Dean being awarded his first ever win, in what was a pretty intense race to the end.
Sunday, November 7th was race day for Late Model Stock Cars and Super Trucks, Super Stocks, Stock 4 Cylinders and Champ Carts. After a grueling 125 laps, Strom Altman Sr. came home the winner of the Late Model Stock Car feature. The second place finish was captured by Ronnie “Flash” Daniels. Both drivers from Summerville, SC the former home of Summerville Speedway where the two became great friends involved in racing. I’d heard stories of how Ronnie “Flash” Daniels got his nickname but many I’d been skeptical of, but now I can attest to one of my own. As he and Averitt Lucas were racing to the checkered flag behind Altman; Averitt appeared to have the advantage but as they came through turns three and four Lucas lost his consistency in the corner and “Flash” capitalized on the moment. In the last 400 ft. Lucas’ second place finish and ownership of a new GM “crate” engine were gone to the tune of about $5700.00. The Late Model Super Truck feature winner was Clay Thomas. Thomas’ lead came late in the race. Jimmy Herrington’s brush with the front stretch wall definitely had some effect on his trucks handling as he tried to hold off hard charging Jamie Weatherford. Weatherford would later fall off contention for the win as his trucks handling would falter allowing Thomas and Archie Adams Jr. to race for the win. “Mr. First Place” Kevin Jackson was victorious in the Stock 4 Cylinder feature after sparks, fire and smoke of the racing competitors. Kent Harper paid an infrequent visit to the track this season and took home the title of 11th Annual Fall Classic Super Stock feature winner.
Despite the cool weather of the season moving in on the speedway it was an awesome two days of racing closing out the 2010 weekly stock car calendar at Florence Motor Speedway. Karting events will still be held on Saturday nights at 8:30 pm. with most of the Kart classes that are popular in the Southeast participating. Anyone that has a child with a go kart ages 6 - 9 years of age or an adult with no experience that may want to see if they want to start go kart racing may make some practice laps during the racing program intermission, or after all the nights races are completed. Admission is only $5.00 and children under 6 yrs. of age are admitted free.
